News from the upstairs library

So much has been happening with the library program this past month!  On April 12, author Kirby Larson was here.  Most of our students got to hear her presentation in the gym, and a few even got to have conversations with her throughout the day.  We thank her for traveling all this way to Iowa to share more about her life and her writings.  We are also very grateful to the Traer Community Foundation and the Tama County Community Foundation for helping to fund Ms. Larson's visit.

Still looking for a book to read before the end of the year?  The 2016-2017 Teen Award and Iowa High School Book Award winners are out on the shelves and ready for you to check out!  You can read descriptions of these winners here:

As we get more new books, we try to also find new homes for a few.  Believe it or not, the library owns quite a few older books that were published as far back as the 1940's! We are offering some of these vintage books up for sale at a starting price of $15 per book.  Please contact me at bjensen@n-tama.k12.ia.us if you would like to see a list.

As we approach the end of the year, please make sure to return your library books in the near future, but no later than Friday, May 20. Thank you!

The library staff has been busy preparing for the upcoming author visit.  This year, Newbery Award-winning author Kirby Larson will be speaking with our students onTuesday, April 12.  Ms. Larson is the author of Duke, Dash, Hattie Big Sky, Audacity Jones, and Nubs, to name just a few.  School librarian Ms. Jensen has visited English/language arts classrooms to speak about Ms. Larson, and Mrs. Cufr, our elementary media associate, has been reading aloud from several of Ms. Larson's books in anticipation of Kirby Larson's visit.  We hope all students will become acquainted with her BEFORE she arrives so that they can learn as much as possible from her when she is here.

Other exciting news is that a very generous woman from Traer has donated her collection of books about the Amish.  Most of them are novels, but there are also a few non-fiction books that contain historical and cultural information.  It will take time to get all of them on the shelves, but several are already available now for check-out. We want to remind the North Tama staff that they also have library privileges, so please come up and see these new books!

What are North Tama students reading these days?  Here are the top titles in order of popularity for first semester:
The Power of Six by Pittacus Lore
Divergent by Veronica Roth
The Eye of Minds by James Dashner
The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan
Chasing Lincoln's Killer by James Swanson
A child called "It": one child's courage to survive, by David Pelzer
The Death Cure by James Dashner
It by Stephen King
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Come see for yourself why North Tama students think these books are a good read!
Here are a few reasons why the 7-12 library is worth the climb upstairs!
Did you know that we subscribe to 20 magazines plus the Traer Star Clipper?  We have several sports magazines, including Sports IllustratedBaseball Digest, andUSA Wrestler.  We also have a wide variety of magazines on cars, trucks, and the outdoors, including Automobile, and Truckin', and Outdoor Life.  Want to keep up on current events or controversial issues?  We've got Time and Pacific Standard.  Science magazines include Scientific American and Popular Science.
If magazines aren't your thing, we have many award-winning books!  Come check out the winners of the Iowa Teen, Newbery, and Printz awards. You can also check out our titles by visiting the online catalog right here!"
